Leon Russell - The Union - 2010 Mercury . Already I see the grimace of disgust some readers then (and) sponente with comments such as "what a drag that trombone Elton John." And probably our friend even know the existence of Leon Russell . Then start by saying that in his long career, Sir Elton has produced excellent records (especially in the beginning), which is an excellent pianist, a great singer and an exceptional performer. As a young man his myth was Leon Russell, pianist, producer, bandleader and musical shaker of Mad Dogs & Englishmen The (a group that accompanied Joe Cocker in a historic tour of great success, in the year of the Lord 1970 ). This bearded musician was founder, with Dennis Cordell Of Shelter Records very active in the 70's and responsible for the publication of some excellent albums (think the first four legendary albums of JJ Cale, the first two outputs Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, with a handful Small beads of blues Freddy King and the excellent efforts of the same record Russell, output in the early 70). Gradually the music business has forgotten him. And now the rich and "bored" Elton felt the need to record an album together with his true age and sickness master, dusting off a 70 sound, light years away from his current best-selling pop and glossy. It seems that the record company's has instead proposed a Christmas album with chamomile and that he has literally sent them to do at that spot ... I tell you now that the disk is very beautiful, intense, very classy. It is in fact the same operation that leaves the nostalgia time is: here are some wonderful songs (such as a beautiful ballad Gone To Shiloh, with a cameo from Neil Young chills immense or "free range" If It Was not For Bad ). The plan of the two musicians is the master and sometimes moves the sound to the mix of boogie, r & b, country and gospel that is the hallmark of the style of Russell (basta ascoltare l’energica Hey Ahab , la giosa Monkey Suit , l’intensa There’s No Tomorrow , la cavalcata honky-tonk A Dream Come True , il “country pop” Jimmie Rodger's Dream ). Non mancano le dolci ballate pianistiche di cui Elton è maestro e che finalmente, grazie anche all’abile produzione di T-Bone Burnette , riescono ad avere una bellezza essenziale, distante assai dagli eccessi glicemici a cui il nostro ormai ci aveva abituato ( Eight Hundred Dollar Shoes , The Best Part Of The Day , Never Too Old [To Hold Somebody] ). Se aggiungiamo that the hard part greats as Brian Wilson, Booker T. Jones, Jim Keltner , Marc Ribot, that's it ... My friend found.

c - BKO - Glitterhouse 2010 . Actually this wonderful CD has gladdened most of my summer, but in November, possibly because of a wet and stormy weather has returned to warm my heart. Chris Eckman, mind of Walkabouts, Hugo Race , restless musician and former member of the historical Bad Seeds , Chris Brokaw , all’inizio con l’ottima meteora sonora Codeine e poi membro dei grandi Come , nel 2007 hanno deciso di creare una nuovo progetto musicale chiamato Dirtmusic . Il loro primo, omonimo album, pubblicato dalla Glitterhouse , vede la luce alla fine di quell’anno; si tratta di un disco di etereo folk rock debitore dello sterminato patrimonio della musica popolare americana (ottima una ipnotica versione di un classico come Morning Dew ). All’epoca poco considerato, è sicuramente un’opera da riscoprire. La svolta dell’unione artistica di queste tre menti musicali è l’invito al Festival In The Desert che si svolge ad Essakane nel Sahara maliano. Qui socializzano con i Tamikrest , nuovi paladini di quell’affascinante tuareg rock (tra suggestioni blues, derive psichedeliche e ancestrale musica sahariana) che ha nei Tinariwen i suoi padri fondatori, e si innamorano della musica di questo popolo itinerante. Il matrimonio stilistico non è forzato, visto che i Dirtmusic nel loro esordio sposavano l’estetica di un folk del deserto. A questo punto è quasi naturale che i nostri, un anno dopo, vadano a Bamako nei Bogolan Studio fondati da Ali Farka Touré per produrre Adagh , ottimo esordio dei Tamikrest , e registrare questo BKO , accompagnati dai giovani musicisti tuareg. Lasciati da parte i pareri scandalizzati di certi “puristi musicali” (brutta razza che ha sempre bazzicato la critica musicale...), si può tranquillamente affermare che la musica più bella spesso nasce dalla contaminazione tra generi e culture (tutta la musica “nera”, dai Caraibi, al Sud America, dal Nuovissimo Mondo, alla madre Africa, fino all’immensa tradizione afro-americana, è un inno all’ibridismo musicale...) e questa fatica discografica dei Dirtmusic lo conferma. Allora è bello perdersi in rock blues sporcati dalla rossa sabbia del Sahara ( Black Gravity , Ready For The Sign, Desert Wind , Lives We Did Not Live ) o farsi trasportare dalle dolci e ipnotiche note di ballate folk, che mischiano in maniera suggestiva atmosfere africane (meravigliosa l’accoppiata tra banjo e strumenti a corda della tradizione maliana in Unknowable e soprattutto nello splendido strumentale Niger Sundown ). Ma la quadratura del cerchio è la riproposizione di una splendida All Tomorrow’s Parties , che in un solo momento unisce i Velvet Underground ad Ali Farka Tourè , la languida decadenza rock dei primi con la dolce malinconia della musica del fiero e solitario popolo del deserto. Futuro Primordiale…
