Ladies Do Christmas ... This time we talk about great female performers who have contributed to the cause Christmas. Apart from the classical Barbara Streisand discs (the famous A Christmas Album, released by Columbia in 1967 and most recently Christmas Memories, released by Sony in 2001), on whose voice we are discussing, but which are burdened with interpretations and arrangements from the Broadway Musical, our attention to begin with, it focuses on the queen of country music Emmylou Harris. His Light Of The Stable (Reprise 1979) is an excellent example of how with the talent we can give new life to classic Christmas stranoti. Beautiful and heartfelt versions of Little Drummer Boy , Silent Night, Away In A Manger and The First Noel creepy, sung a cappella. But the whole album is made through angelic voice of Emmylou and the sound that is inspired by the elegant simplicity with traditional country (listen Beautiful Star Of Bethlehem to believe). Rating: 28.5 / 30.
With Diana Krall and her Christmas Songs (Verve 2005), we dive into a big band Christmas. Great production, great music, beautiful voice of the Canadian pianist, but he ends the disc is a bit 'too glossy (indeed the most direct reference is the amazing and "hot" Christmas album to Ella Fitzgerald ...).
The Christmas Song , I'll Be Home For Christmas , White Christmas , Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas ), far from the style of our own. Then the sudden touch of class that you do not expect more: a great version of River, showpiece of Blue, Joni Mitchell album masterpiece . Linda ispiratissimo is the voice, while an elegant string arrangement makes us fly. At this point, the disc takes a strong sectarian comes with persistent presence of choirs in the long run tired, Linda while posing as a soprano. Only time succeeded in the latter part of the disc is a choral Silent Night. Definitely a missed opportunity. Rating: 26/30 (only for the presence di River , altrimenti…)
Sheryl Crow , ha fatto uscire Home For Christmas (A&M Records) nel 2008, quest’anno ha ripubblicato lo stesso album con l’aggiunta di un nuovo brano. Dimenticate lo stile rock della nostra, perché in questa fatica discografica natalizia Sheryl si affida alla tradizione musicale afro-americana; così le canzoni si colorano di gospel ( Go Tell It On The Mountain ), vengono arrangiate con stile soul di casa Stax ( The Christmas Song , White Christmas , Merry Christmas Baby , Blue Christmas ), diventano dolci ballate r&b (I'll Be Home For Christmas and The Bells Of St. Mary's seem to come from the sessions of the At Last Etta James ). More traditional arrangements of the sweet Here Is A Star That Shines Tonight , Hello My Friend Hello and All Through The Night , while Holy Night resent echoes from soul ballad. The final Long Road Home is actually an original from the last recording effort Crow, 100 Miles From Memphis (A & M Records, 2010), coincidentally a tribute to Southern Soul. A sincere and successful album. Rating: 28/30 The class of
Annie Lennox service to Santa Claus: it could be summed up her beautiful Christmas album came out recently and titled A Christmas Cornucopia (Decca 2010). We learn that we have spent his youth singing in church choirs in his native Scotland. So for Annie is like a return to basics. To do this, and get help from the manufacturer Mike Stevens, a 30-piece orchestra and by ' African Children's Choir . The proceeds of the disc will go to The Annie Lennox Foundation, an institution that raises funds to support education of women and African children affected by HIV / AIDS. The album is pleasant because it manages to read so original songs in the tradition of Christmas. Special mention to the ensemble Angels From The Realms Of Glory , a God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen full of references to Scots-Irish musical tradition, the sad Lullay Lullay , and numerous O Little Town Of Bethlehem and Silent night . A veritable cornucopia of Christmas. Rating: 28/30

Italian Ladies Do Christmas ... But better! does not pay to have published this summer its beautiful Afternoon Songs (Aegean), already widely celebrated by me, Silvia Manco enjoys record a crisp aftertaste jazz Christmas album, entitled Suddenly It's Christmas Time (Stain). Accompanied by a brilliant rhythmic base, the good Fabio Accardi the skins and Giuseppe Bassi on bass, the Manco offers us a handful of standard class interpretation crystalline. We start with a Jingle Bells that is pure distillation of swing, enhanced by a truly just Gaetano Partipilo on alto sax. The subsequent intense Silent Night demonstrates the quality of Silvia Manco Trio. In fact, while our pantry hot blue notes with his plan, Netherlands delights us with a short and intense bass only well supported by the creative carpet percussive Accardi, and then wrap up all the voice and elegant Silvia . A version that has nothing to envy to other popular interpretations. Another evergreen Christmas, White Christmas , here rendered as a mellow ballad with Nat King Cole , is enhanced by notes of velvety tenor sax Jonata Max. But the disc is made up solely of classic American music: there are also two original songs (the delicate ballads Suddenly It's Christmas Time and We Couldn’t Be Happier , quest’ultima firmata in coppia con Gegè Telesforo ) e un delizioso omaggio alla musica popolare brasiliana, Borboleta , vera passione della Manco . Ascoltando questo disco si fa improvvisamente Natale! Voto: 28,5/30
A parte la sua voce deliziosa, quello che colpisce in questo disco sono gli arrangiamenti built around these classics and the creation of a sound balanced between jazz tradition and Mediterranean influences. The album, well produced by Roberto Colombo , sees Ruggiero accompanied by a few great musicians who know how to strike the right balance of sound (Mark Harris and Paolo Di Sabatino the plan, and Stefano Dall'Ora bass Massimo Moriconi, Massimo Manzi and Ivan Ciccarelli on drums, David Gregory on horns, Piero Salvatori the cello, Daniele Di Gregorio the marimba and vibraphone, the Renzo Ruggeri accordion le chitarre della Oficina Guitar ). Voto: 28,5/30
Buon Natale e arrivederci al prossimo anno!
