Quicksilver Messenger Service - Quicksilver Messenger Service (Capitol 1968)
the late seventies, boy hungry for rock music, I came across in Californian psychedelic. Memorize Dead Live of Grateful Dead and Surrealistic Pillow of Jefferson Airplaine , I found that to complete the trinity was missing a California psychedelic group with very long name, such Quicksilver Messenger Service . I gathered information and left the game of their second LP Happy Trails (1969), recorded live in part and considered their masterpiece. In Rome, a small shop in Trastevere, I found a double LP used with the first and the second disk (reprint Capitol / EMI 1974). I bought it without hesitation. When I got home immediately got Happy Trails on the plate and I became enveloped by the wonderful sour notes of the guitar John Cipollina , which came from then to my favorite guitar heroes (and listen to the fantastic mileage Who Do You Love to believe). Ripresomi emotion, afraid of being disappointed by 'listening to the first self-titled album today: I read that it was not very convincing ... But when the needle rested on the first scoring, I suffered two discoveries: one, that their debut album was absolutely wonderful, and second, that it was better to trust your ears rather than some of rock criticism. And here I am again after thirty years to weave the praises of an album released in 1968 for the Capitol. The group includes, in addition to the aforementioned Cipollina , Gary Duncan vocals and guitar, Greg Elmore on drums , David Freiberg al basso. Dino’s Song , del loro friend and future member of the group Dino Valenti , is a typical psychedelic song with a lot of choral singing to Jefferson Airplaine . We arrive at the height of the disc: Gold And Silver , instrumental track, which recalls the Take Five of Dave Brubeck , it is a magnificent ride electric, where the intertwining of guitar Duncan e Cipollina ci regalano un sogno psichedelico. L’atmosfera si alleggerisce con It’s been too long , un brano r&b spruzzato di acido. Poi si finisce con la lunga e onirica The Fool , dove l’estetica western cara al gruppo trova la sua sublimazione sonora. Epici.
